Are you wondering why your child doesn't want to study English?
Here are some reasons why your child might be distancing themselves from English learning and some solutions on how to overcome these problems.
Reason 1: They are bored
Perhaps your child associates English learning with hours of long grammar classes, lengthy textbooks filled with words they don't understand or repetitive drilling of vocabulary that is too easy for them. One of the main reaons children dislike learning is because they, simply, feel bored. That's why Blossom ESL is here to rid the misconception that learning English is boring and to show children that English can be fun!
Solution 1: Change their perception of English learning
While you don't have control of their English learning at school, you are able to influence your child's experience of English outside of school. Try and show your child that English can be fun. Find some exciting English games for them to play, print some interesting English worksheets for them or even find a fun private English teacher who can instil a love of learning English in your child.
Reason 2: They feel shy
Learning a new language can be a daunting task, especially for younger children who are still mastering their native language. There are various reasons why your child might feel shy to communicate in English. Perhaps they are afraid of making a mistake, maybe they fear being misunderstood or they might feel as if they don't know enough words to hold a conversation.
Solution 2: Praise their skills
A lot of children feel shy when learning English because they are not confident in their abilities. Instead of trying to force your child to simply not be shy, accept them and praise their English skills at every opportunity. When your child starts to feel more confident in their ability to communicate in English, they will soon start to feel less shy and they can finally begin to enjoy English.
Reason 3: They feel too much pressure
Blossom ESL understand that many parents want their children to learn English so that they can one day study abroad or in an English speaking country. While it's great for parents to have such goals for their child, it's important that parents do not place too much pressure on their children. When a child feels overly pressurised, they might respond by distancing themselves from English due to a fear that they will not succeed and live up to their parents expectations.
Solution 3: Focus on the process
While it's important to have goals for your child, it's more important to focus on the present, rather than the result. Remember to encourage your child to do their best, praise them and let them know when they're doing a good job. This will motivate and inspire them to keep working hard and to continue learning English.
